European qualifying for the 2028 FIFA Futsal World Cup will begin in April 2026, with Scotland set to compete in the preliminary round alongside three other nations.

Following the draw held by UEFA in December, Scotland have been placed in Group A together with Denmark (hosts), Andorra, and Malta.

The preliminary round will be played as a single-venue mini-tournament, with all four teams facing each other over the course of several days.

The top two teams from the group will progress to the main round of the European qualification pathway.

Scotland’s opponents in Group A

Scotland’s qualification campaign will see them face a mix of familiar and new opponents.

Denmark will host the Group A mini-tournament, providing the venue for the three matchdays. Hosting duties often give teams a logistical advantage, but the compact tournament format means every game can prove decisive.

Malta are a recent opponent for Scotland. The two sides met earlier this year at the Futsal Week January Cup in Croatia, where Malta secured a 5–2 victory. While the result went Malta’s way, the match provided Scotland with a valuable benchmark against one of their upcoming qualifying rivals.

Andorra complete the group, presenting another competitive European opponent in what promises to be a tightly contested section.

Recent international experience

Scotland’s participation in the Futsal Week January Cup earlier this year provided important international exposure ahead of the upcoming qualification campaign.

The tournament brought together national teams from across Europe and beyond, offering Scotland the opportunity to test themselves against strong opposition in a competitive environment.

Across the competition, Scotland faced:

  • Morocco, one of the world’s top-ranked futsal nations

  • Switzerland, a well-organised European side

  • Malta, who will also feature in Scotland’s qualifying group

Matches such as these offer valuable insight into the tempo, tactical demands, and decision-making required at international level, helping players gain experience against a variety of playing styles.

How qualification works

A total of 48 UEFA national associations have entered the European qualification pathway for the 2028 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

The 24 lowest-ranked teams begin in the preliminary round, where they are divided into six groups of four teams.

Each group is played as a mini-tournament at a single venue, with the group winners and runners-up advancing to the main round, where they will join the 24 highest-ranked teams in Europe.

From there, qualification continues through multiple stages before the teams that will represent Europe at the 2028 FIFA Futsal World Cup are decided.

When the matches will take place

The preliminary round of European qualifying will take place between 6 and 15 April 2026.

Further details regarding match schedules, venues, and kick-off times are expected to be confirmed closer to the tournament.

Scottish Futsal will share updates on the national team’s fixtures and progress through the qualifiers as more information becomes available.
