Super League title on the line in Perth as race goes to the wire

There could be a brand new winner of the Scottish Futsal Super League this weekend.

The biggest day in the three-way title race takes place this Sunday at UHI Perth.

The trophy could be heading to Aberdeen or Dundee for the very first time.

But reigning champions PYF Saltires are at home and can also set up a chance to take a fifth-straight title next month.

There is also the small matter of Scotland’s UEFA Futsal Champions League place to play for.

Dundee

The first match of the evening in Perth sees Dundee face Letham Santos.

Only a win will do for the City of Discovery side against their Tayside rivals. Do so and a draw in the later clash between PYF Saltires and Aberdeen will see Dundee seal a first-ever title.

Rob Black of last season’s runners-up said: “Santos are an unpredictable side full of Scotland capped players so we know that it will be a tough game.

“Obviously we are in the underdog position needing results to go our way so we will just focus on winning our game and hope the rest of the pieces fall into place.

"If we were offered this position to be challenging to win the league at the start of the season we’d have bitten your hand off.”

Aberdeen

If Dundee can finish the league season with a fourth-straight win they will go top of the table ahead of the final match of the night.

But a win for Aberdeen puts them above their east-coast rivals – and secures the title in their debut Super League campaign.

The Scottish Cup holders lead the division going into their final league match but skipper Grant Campbell knows how big a task lies in front of them against PYF Saltires.

He said: “We’re really looking forward to the game.

“It’s quite amazing really – we only played our first futsal match 14 months ago and now we have this massive opportunity.

“It’s hard to believe but we know how tough the game will be.

“We are up against the multiple Scottish champions who have played in the Champions League and have multiple Scotland internationals.

“We’re under no illusions but are aware of the opportunity we have which makes us extra motivated to do all we can to win.

“We are glad we have taken it to the wire. You never know what can happen now.”

PYF Saltires

In their way stand the reigning champions for the past four seasons.

PYF Saltires have been dominant for years and finished the last campaign with a perfect record.

They need to beat Aberdeen to give themselves a chance of retaining that title. They have one more match to play after the other two, facing local rivals Letham Santos on May 12.

There could be a play-off with Dundee for the championship if both win their remaining games.

Firstly, though, PYF Saltires have to get the better of an Aberdeen side who top the table going into the contest.

Skipper Kyle Ballingall said: “We have to try and bounce back after the disappointment from the last match (defeat to Dundee).

“We have no excuses of the position of where we are in the league and we have to try and win the game, it’s that simple.

“Aberdeen can win the league on Sunday so we know they’ll be determined to win the game, we have to match them in every aspect while sticking to our own game plan.

“It would be good to see a big turnout at the match.”

Free entry

It is free entry for spectators at UHI Perth with the games kicking off at 5.10pm and 7.10pm respectively.

Earlier in the day, Edinburgh University and Galacticos will battle it out in Super League 2 with second-place on the line at the Edinburgh University Sports Union.

The two sides played out a dramatic 7-7 draw back in November.
